The New Seward Highway travels along Turnagain Arm, located just south of Anchorage,
Alaska. The New Seward Highway is a National Scenic Byway and considered to be in the
top ten most scenic places to travel in America. This awesome mountain
and ocean scenery serves as the backdrop for Alaska Log Structures Log
Building Course.
While log home construction has been around for centuries, starting with
many of the Scandinavian countries and Russia in particular, the craft has
probably never seen as much interest and improvement as it has in the
past 40 years. It is our desire at Alaska Log Structures Building Course for
you to develop skills of working with logs that so many have wanted to
learn. This is a unique artwork. We feel that it is important to pass on a
craft that is environmentally friendly. Students will enjoy learning the
scribe fit method of joining logs together. Also, learning how to begin the
process of selecting and cutting flats on the first course to setting cap wall logs and
preparation for constructing various roof member configurations will provide you a great
sense of achievement. There are aspects of construction and craft that you can learn on
other courses, via online education or some building camps. However, this course will
give you direct, hands-on experience. You will learn from the basics on up, with
experienced teachers to guide you. Serving as the main instructor, Greg Anderson has
over 37 years of experience in log home construction. He has served as a Director for the
Great Lakes Log Crafters Association (1990-1992), and is still active in building for others.
Stone Masonry Class
Jason Anderson will be the main stone work instructor and is a third generation Stone
Mason. The class will be 3 days, 6 hours each day 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The next class will
be announced at a later date. The class will teach you the basics and get you started in
learning how to lay real stone and artificial stone. You will be taught how to mix your
own mortar, how to shape stone with hand held tools, and how to select stone for your
projects. Those attending the class will be required to bring their own work clothes,
steel toed boots, safety glasses, hard hat, and rubber gloves. Once you have completed
one of our courses we will point you in the right direction for employment in log home
